Students will visit the Museum of the American Indian and learn about civil rights movements that Native Americans have faced. Class will focus specifically on the following exhibits:

- Compare and Contrast the struggles of the Native Hawaiians to the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s
- What rights were the Native Hawaiians denied?
- What similarities do you see between Hawaiian children and Olemaun in When I was Eight?
- What rights are Hawaiians still struggling for?
- Nation to Nation: Treaties Between the United States and American Indian Nations
- How have Native Americans been denied civil rights? Give examples
- How were Native Americans inspired by the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s?
- Look at the boarding school exhibit:
- How is this similar to the story When I was Eight?
- How is this similar to Ruby Bridges' story?
- Why were Native American children sent to boarding schools?
- What does it mean to be civilized?
- Were Native Americans considered civilized? Why or why not?
